Waha ika means "mouth of the fish", because of the notched convex side of the patu. The human figure carved on the concave side is called a pkaiora, a war God to guard the warrior during battle. At the top end of the handle is a whiti, a small head also seen as a guardian. Wahaika were traditionally made from native hardwoods or whalebone. This one has been made
